20 :: Half Moon (1606)

This explorer ship was made famous by Henry Hudson, the English explorer who gave his name to Hudson Bay. In 1609, aboard the Half Moon with an English and Dutch crew, it was Hudson’s turn to sail in search for China... this time via the North Pole. In 1610 he sailed again with another ship: Discovery.

Half Moon has a lion figurehead, a fact probably unknown to Lecouvie. Strangely, he sculpted a disproportionate “cutwater” (forepoint). The ship was destroyed by fire in 1618.
