22 :: Warship (mid-17th century)

This three-masted galleon is heavily armed and provided with a lateen sail on the mizzenmast. Her sail area is impressive. Perhaps this is Cardinal Richelieu’s famous Couronne, launched in 1638.

This ship in about 40 m in length with at least a 1000 tonnes displacement, and has a crew of 600. The gilded wood figurehead represents Hercules killing the Hydra.

As can be seen, Lecouvie is not aiming for precision and fine tuning at all costs. Several elements are improvised. In the end, he is representing his admiration and attachment to a way of life he feels is disappearing.
