23 :: Crescent (1650)

After the caravel, the carrack and the galleon came the vessel, of which Crescent (a German ship) is a primitive type.

Ranks of ships in order of importance and function, such was the environment of the vessel. Rigged for formation evolutions, the war vessel must be fast and stable. It gave rise to many technical improvements.

On Crescent, the main masts are now made in three sections: the lower mast, the top mast, and the royal mast. A jib boom is added to the bowsprit on which to fix the stays of the staysails. The aft sail, the spanker, remains a lateen sail.
