03 :: Egyptian Galley (3rd century B.C.)

The galley represents centuries of history. They only disappeared in the 18th century.

This one, with braced arched sail, light keel and slender ends, reminds us that the Egyptians developed a boat with a low waterline and shallow draught. She also shows that they knew how to make sail and oar work together.

At the bow, a very characteristic foc’sle. Its low and square silhouette appears frequently in the “logs” the Egyptians sculpted on their monuments and on many Roman amphorae.
