32 :: Triple-masted whaling schooner (19th century)

Missing only a smoke stack, this boat is an almost exact replica of one of the most famous whalers of the 19th century, Terra-Nova, built in Dundee, Scotland, but registered in St. John’s, Newfoundland. 53 m long, Terra-Nova participated in the famous Scott expedition to Antarctica, in 1904.

Norwegian Svend Foyn invented the gun- and explosive-propelled harpoon in the latter half of the 19th century. A modern industry, bearing little resemblance to traditional whaling fisheries, was born.
