05 :: Græco-Roman Warship

This græco-roman bireme is fitted with its characteristic ram: a rostrum. Romans often decorated their speaking platforms with rostra taken from enemy vessels.

While Mycenæans, Phœnicians and Greeks glorified their prowess at sea, Romans did not honour the trades of the sea. Landlubbers first and foremost, they nevertheless conquered maritime peoples and profited from naval trade. Strange apparent contradiction that maybe reflects only our own ignorance. Looking closer, the remains of the Roman navy discovered during the last few decades are witness to great resourcefulness.
